Woodlands consists of violinist Kristina Leesik and harpist Justyna Krzyżanowska. Focusing on tradition and innovation, they create a platform where Scottish and Irish music meet and transform into dreamlike and captivating arrangements. With backgrounds in Swedish folk music and classical music respectively, combined with influences from jazz and pop, their compositions remain one of a kind. Woodlands’ repertoire spans the width of the Celtic tradition and other genres, showcasing an intense diversity of beautiful songs, sweeping melodies and expressive performances of jigs and reels. The harp with its resonant sound and rhythmic drive, and the fiddle with sweeping tones full of variations, complete and enrich one another to form an exciting and nuanced musical experience.
Woodlands released their debut album in 2020 and have enjoyed touring it across Sweden with notable performances at festivals such as Urkult and Norrköping Folkmusikfestival. They have also collaborated with Swedish music organizations Västmanlandsmusiken and Scenkonst Sörmland, playing at elderly homes and creating an original children’s show “Kungens Krona” (The King’s Crown), which was showcased in 30 locations around east coast Sweden in 2022. In 2019 Woodlands started playing with duo Bäckafall, which yet broadened their sound and repertoire. The quartet has performed at festivals Umefolk, Göteborg Folk Festival and Saltofolk, released two singles and arranged music for a project with folk band and classical choir. During July 2023, Woodlands+Bäckafall were the backing band for the newly written folk music musical “Gruvfruns Guld” by Hampus Grönberg and Marit Eriksson in Falu Copper Mine. The musical ran for 11 successful shows.
Kristina Leesik and Justyna Krzyżanowska met during their studies at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm in 2017 and continued their musical journey togethersome years later at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, where they both deepened their knowledge of the Scottish folk music tradition. After completing a three year bachelor education in Swedish folk music at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm, Kristina went on to study a two year teaching degree then moved to Scotland where she completed a masters in Scottish traditional music (2023). Justyna finished her master’s degree in Scottish traditional music at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in 2019 after a classical music bachelor’s degree at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm.

The duo showcases an intense diversity of beautiful songs, sweeping melodies and expressive performances of jigs and reels from the Celtic tradition and blends it with influences from Swedish folk music, jazz and pop. Woodlands består av Kristina Leesik, fiol, och Justyna Krzyżanowska, keltisk harpa. Med rötter inom både folkmusik och klassisk musik växer ett unikt och nyskapande sound, där skotska, irländska och egenskrivna låtar berikas av influenser från jazz och pop. Deras repertoar och mångsidighet ger sig uttryck i allt från spännande balladberättelser och smäktande melodier i drömska arrangemang till oemotståndligt svängiga jigs och reels. Kristina Leesik och Justyna Krzyżanowska möttes 2017 under sina studier på Kungl. Musikhögskolan (KMH) i Stockholm, och fortsatte sedan sitt samspel under studier i skotsk folkmusik vid the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland (RCS). Efter en kandidatexamen inom svensk folkmusik vid KMH, gjorde Kristina en tvåårig pedagogisk påbyggnad och flyttade sedan till Skottland där hon studerade en master i skotsk folkmusik (2023). 2022 erhöll hon Zornmärket och blev riksspelman inom den sörmländska traditionen. Justyna avslutade sin masterexamen i skotsk folkmusik 2019 på RCS efter en kandidatexamen inom klassisk musik på KMH och är nu aktiv som frilansande harpist i Stockholm. Det senaste året har hon spelat med bland annat Sveriges Radios Symfoniorkester, Kungl. Hovkapellet, Gävle Symfoniorkester och Stockholm Concert Orchestra.
